It was a grey, rainy Wednesday morning in Paris by the time the U.S. presidential election results were announced, and the weather mirrored students’ reactions: Anger, disappointment and fear.
“To all Republicans and Democrats and Independents across this nation, I say it is time for us to come together as one united people. I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans. And this is so important to me,” Trump added.
Neither the government nor whatever makes our lives great now are beholden to the federal politicians we elect today. Today’s election does not predict what is to come — but our scrutiny will be more important than ever along with our continued engagement in the political process.
Against seemingly overwhelming odds, including accusations of a “rigged” election, controversial comments about women, Hispanics and Muslims, and a massive exodus of establishment Republicans, real estate mogul and Republican nominee Donald Trump has triumphed in the 2016 election and will become the 45th president of the United States.
Overall, the general mood towards the U.S. presidential nominees was best summarized by Cametto, who said it was a choice between “le moins mal (the least evil).”
