Stanford University vigil affirms support for Paris

By Jack Hennessy, GSS correspondent

STANFORD, California — Approximately 100 students, faculty and staff at Stanford University gathered in White Plaza on Sunday to sing, light candles, read poems, and speak out in support of Paris after a night of terrorist bombings and gunfire attacks that left an estimated 129 dead and 352 injured, 99 of them critically.

Mathilde Gonnet, 20, who is studying aeronautics at Stanford, said she followed news of the attack last Friday for hours on the Internet, reaching out to friends and trying to find out if they were safe.

“I am very shocked, and this makes me feel a bit insecure, because when you realize that this might happen at any moment in france, it’s very scary,” said Gonnet, who is from Paris.

“We should stay strong and continue living like we used to,” she added. “Not be scared … because this is what they want.”
