Iran seizes U.S. ships as Obama prepares for final #SOTU

Ten U.S. sailors were in Iranian custody Tuesday afternoon after their two small Navy craft apparently entered Iranian waters for a brief period, CNN reported.

News of the seizures broke as the White House started streaming the lead-up to the president’s final State of the Union address, expected to begin at 9 p.m. EST.

Prior to the news, Obama had been expected to focus his remarks on gun control, Guantanamo Bay, and the growing fight against ISIS.

Iran’s Fars News Agency reported Tuesday that the U.S. Navy is considering “a long-term presence in the Med(iterranean)” to deal with Russia’s “increased naval capabilities.”

The seizure came after rising tensions last spring over key shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, a six-mile-wide waterway that connects the Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf.

U.S. Navy warships began escorting British vessels through the area at the end of April, along with U.S. ships, following the seizure of a vessel bearing the flag of the Marshall Islands by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
