Behind the crime: Annotated photo shows Nemtsov crime scene

Boris Nemtsov, a liberal politician and physicist, was assassinated on the streets of Moscow on Feb. 27. Since the murder, there has been wild speculation about who killed Nemtsov and — more importantly — why. Some theories allege that Russian President Vladimir Putin hired hitmen for the attack, while others point to Russian secret services, foreign secret services and even Chechen extremists. Though as of this writing two men have been charged with Nemtsov’s murder, there is still no certainty as to the reasons for and the groups that may be behind the crime.

Taylor Munoz and her team of fellow Sequoia High School students used Thinglink to produce an annotated crime scene, based on a photo by the Reuters news agency, that explores the connections between Nemtsov’s murder and Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “Crime and Punishment.” To see these connections, please click on the photo below.

As is true of Nemtsov’s still-unsolved death, the plot of “Crime and Punishment” centers on the slow uncovering of a murder.
