Say hello to our new logo

By Simon Greenhill, News Editor

BERKELEY, California — Global Student Square is proud to unveil its new logo, designed by Mara Pleasure, a first-year student at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts.

The logo, which shows a globe surrounded by a square, emphasizes GSS’s commitment to connecting students all around the world in one space and providing them with a medium for expression. GSS gives students an opportunity to explore issues in their communities and around the world and connects those students with each other through a powerful platform to publish stories and engage with world affairs from a youth perspective.

“I really wanted to create a circle within a square and a square within a circle, because I thought that would be a good way of showing the emergence of voices within a square and then also going around the globe and connecting (them),” Pleasure said.

Pleasure’s design also highlights the core of GSS’s mission: To give students a place to connect, collaborate and create across national, racial and cultural borders.

I love our new logo because it is student-designed — that means everything to me,” said Beatrice Motamedi, GSS founder and executive director.

“I think that it shows clearly what we’re about — the square that symbolizes the power of students to speak out wherever they are and speak for change, and the globe, which signifies the issues of our day, such as global warming, which can’t be changed by one person alone.”

The logo’s color scheme blends a classic blue, which Pleasure described as “professional” and “calming,” with a vivid saffron, chosen for its visual appeal as well as its cultural significance around the world.

“I love the colors — especially saffron, which is the color of Buddhism in southeast Asia,” Motamedi said.  “I think the logo is perfect.”
